Diary of a Struggling Comics Artist | Scott Shaw talks Doris Danger! (2 of 2)
Scott Shaw tells Chris about his pornographic Jack Kirby parody piece, how Kirby reacted to it, talks about Chris's Kirby parody and homage comic (Doris Danger), asks about the new Doris Danger graphic novel for Fantagraphics, about the coloring of the book, the editorial input of Fantagraphics, and the two discuss formulas of comics and what happens if you create a work that doesn't fit into that formula. This is part two of an interview, that began here: ruclips.net/video/PVzSHyPcoUE/видео.html

Odd...that no artists seemed to want be a "gold key"..."charlton"..dell...archie artist to start out! DC was the zenith...then Marvel creeped in. Why those dull monotone covers fascinated me as a kid. None of that bright splashy color pallet for Kirby. Those were the days...nice to see Mr. Adams in the flesh. We fans always fantasized our favorite artist.....and they never seem to fit our expectations...well, at least mine. Must be the Wally Wood/Ditko trope. Thanks for the interview.

Nice to hear some positve thoughts on comics.I have avoided "fanboys" due to their opinion that everything sucks. I was already reading mainstream comics & then found my first Kamandi (no cover-10cents)was the giant grasshopper & Kamandi fighting for their lives in a death race. Blew my find. Then it happened again in´77 when I saw Star Wars.

Once Rivera, Martin, and Pulido were withdrawn from Spider-man, I lost interest. These companies can spend $250M on a single movie, but can’t staff an artist on a one book for two months basis. That is just sickening.

The fact comic companies are not hiring merit based talent and producing sub par stories ignoring canon has driven fans away. The fans simply walk away. The big two do not make a lot of money and pass on that lack of revenue on to the creators( who again in the large part suck) and add on cost of the books to what readers remain. You must hire excellent people who make real non political comics of all genres and dump the terrible distribution system for comic books to have a chance of recovering. The only great stuff now is creator owned. It’s the only stuff I buy has it’s still challenging and made without agenda other than entertaining its audience.

The best advice to aspiring creators is to keep creating and take care of your mental health to keep that creative spark alive. Also, make sure that you also consume media. You need to be able to understand what people WANT to consume, then give it to them. I’m just a nobody though lol but it sounds good in my head. ❤

This was an interesting one to hear. I have an essential tremor, and I know it affects my art. Hearing how other artists with tremors deal with their own gives me more insight into different aspects. Makes me think how Charles Schultz had an essential tremor, and how it proves that one can't use it as the only reason their art isn't any good (because Schultz and J.H. Williams both prove you can do well in spite of it).
